Complete frame-off restoration of a Land Rover Series IIA 88

Produced between April 1958 and 1971, the Land Rover Series II represented a significant evolution of the original Series I. In 1961, the updated Series IIA was introduced, becoming one of the most recognisable and successful Land Rover models ever built.

The Series II brought improvements across virtually every area of the vehicle. A new 2.25-litre engine replaced the previous 2.0-litre unit, while enhancements to the steering system, strengthened differential components and a slightly wider body improved both comfort and capability. The revised dimensions also provided additional space for taller drivers and passengers.

This left-hand-drive Series IIA was built in 1963 and originally served as a military vehicle. Thanks to the rigorous maintenance standards required for military service, such vehicles were typically kept in excellent mechanical condition throughout their working lives. In 1972, the vehicle was acquired by the Kramer family in Milan, Italy.

Owned by the family for several decades, the Land Rover was kept at their mountain property and used primarily during summer holidays. Following the passing of Mrs Kramer, the vehicle saw little further use and was subsequently sold to Mr Leggerini, who began a restoration programme before health issues prevented him from completing the project. Throughout this period, the vehicle remained undercover and was regularly maintained, with the engine started approximately every three months.

The Land Rover was then acquired and subjected to a comprehensive frame-off restoration carried out to the highest standards. Every major mechanical component, including the engine, gearbox and differential, has been meticulously rebuilt. The engine block was bored to its sixth oversize specification and fitted with matching pistons, while a slight increase in compression ratio delivers improved performance and drive without compromising character.

To enhance usability, the original unsynchronised gearbox was replaced with a fully synchronised unit from the final Series IIA production models of 1971. A brake servo has also been fitted, resulting in a more confident and comfortable driving experience.

The bodywork was separated from the chassis, extensively restored and refinished, while retaining the vehicle's original doors. Panel fit is excellent and the doors close precisely. The vehicle is finished in Grasmere Green, a colour inspired by the 2015 Defender Heritage Edition. The window frames, hood frame and bumper have all been re-galvanised.

The original chassis was found to be in excellent condition and has been professionally restored and refinished in black. Period-correct, refurbished windscreen wiper motors have been installed, alongside a Smiths under-seat heater. The cabin features new leather-trimmed seats, styled after the later Series IIA models with folding backrests. A discreetly integrated Marshall Bluetooth speaker, activated via a concealed switch, provides modern convenience while preserving the vehicle's classic appearance.

The result is an exceptional Land Rover Series IIA 88, restored without compromise and enhanced with carefully considered upgrades to improve reliability, comfort and everyday usability. Finished in an authentic Land Rover colour scheme and complemented by a new soft top and interior trim, this is a striking example of an increasingly rare classic.

Whether for the enthusiast, serious collector or adventurer seeking a vehicle to drive and enjoy, this beautifully restored Series IIA represents a rare opportunity to acquire a truly special Land Rover.
