Launched as the replacement for the V12 E-type the XJ-S was far more of a "grand-tourer" than an out and out sports car. Power came from the Jaguar V12 engine with a choice of a manual or automatic gearbox. In 1991 the XJS was relaunched in its final form under Ford Motor Company's new ownership with number of upgrades and more modern powertrains. The car received a new 4.0 litre version of the AJ6 straight-six engine, which was given the new name of AJ16 in 1994, equipped with coil-on-plug ignition.
